Overview
Talking about an island like Vanuatu fills my mind with unique memories.
It’s not just about the idyllic beaches—though they are amazing—but for people like me, who get restless after two days on the sand, these islands offer incredible adventures.
It's tough to plan an itinerary here because it all depends on how much beach time you want.
I'll share a bit of my journey with some tips and must-see spots.
This will likely be a short, list-style post—no story or image could truly do this place justice!
Tips
The journey begins in the stunning capital, Port Vila.
Most tourists stay here, enchanted by the large resorts, waterfalls, and sandy beaches—and who could blame them?
Port Vila alone is worth the trip with its beautiful seas.
But the wild heart of Vanuatu can be found on other islands, like Espiritu Santo, home to many eco-lodges, some even on private islands that are surprisingly affordable.
Islands like Ratua are unforgettable, and spending even a few days here feels like a luxurious Robinson Crusoe experience.
Aside from snorkeling with tropical fish, turtles, and rays, the must-do activity on Espiritu Santo is canyoning at Millennium Caves.
Hiking through the jungle, swimming in a canyon with waterfalls cascading down, and floating downriver is absolutely unforgettable!
A few daring jumps into the water make it even more exhilarating, especially on a rainy day when the water levels rise.
Another similar thrill is the Mount Hope Waterfall adventure—either of these is a must!
Also, don’t miss the Nanda Blue Hole, a natural pool with the most breathtaking electric blue water, surrounded by dense jungle. In fact, Espiritu Santo has several incredible blue holes, some offering more extended adventures like kayaking.
Next, hop over to the island of Tanna, with another stop in Port Vila.
The highlight of Tanna is the climb up Mount Yasur, a volcano where you can stand right at the crater’s edge, watching fiery lava explosions at your feet! The red-hot glow at night is an experience not to be missed, though photos don’t do it justice!
Tanna also boasts vibrant coral reefs, teeming with marine life.
Plus, it’s home to a unique community that practices the fascinating . Emerging during and after World War II, the locals, observing the massive supplies ("cargo") brought by the Westerners, believed these items were divine gifts. The most famous of these cults is the John Frum cult, where it’s believed that John Frum will return one day with ships full of material goods. The cult represents the hope for prosperity, blending local traditions with Western influences. Some locals (though not all) even perform military-style marches and build wooden replicas of planes, tanks, and other military gear using palm leaves! Truly one of a kind!
My impressions
As I reread my story, I realize how hard it is to capture the essence of Vanuatu. Beyond the undeniable natural beauty, the people radiate a warmth and good vibes like nowhere else. Sparkling seas, dense jungles, and unique tropical fruits! Part of me hopes Vanuatu remains a hidden gem, untouched by the masses.
Food
More than the food, what sticks with me is the Kava—a drink made from dried roots with a very calming and relaxing effect. Take it easy, but definitely give it a try.
Accommodation
Look for a beachfront guesthouse or eco-lodge. If you find one on a private island, even better!
