Itinerary and Tips
The beauty of Tromsø is not just in its surrounding woodlands or the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights.
You can also enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience: whale watching from a unique perspective.
I joined a small-group tour (which is always recommended for any tours in Tromsø), with a morning pick-up from my hotel.
The beginning wasn't promising: a large tour bus picked up many people, and I started to wonder why they called it a small-group tour.
Soon, it became clear. Out of the large group, only 10 of us were dropped off in a different area, while the rest continued to the port where larger ships depart for whale tours.
To my surprise, I realized that our entire tour would be on a small Zodiac boat! It was exciting, though the -10°C temperature made me a bit hesitant.
After a cup of hot tea and getting into our technical gear, we set off for the Skjervøy area, with another Zodiac following behind.
Luckily, the sea was calm, with no waves.
After 10 minutes of waiting, the first humpback whale leapt incredibly high, mesmerizing everyone! That was just the "appetizer."
Over the next two hours, we had the chance to see many orcas, several humpback whales, and even a couple of fin whales.
One whale suddenly decided to jump just a few meters away from the Zodiac, both scaring and thrilling us all.
The cold? Everyone forgot about it.
The next day, I wanted to do the tour again, but unfortunately, there were no seats available. So, I tried the tour with the larger boats.
It was still a great experience, and I think it's perfect for kids or older people. However, it doesn't compare to the Zodiac ride, where you can get closer to the whales and feel the thrill of the speed.
Top Picks:
- Choose a small tour
- Opt for the Zodiac tour; it’s more agile, and you can get closer to the whales.
