Where all is starting: HOME

Here is where all is starting, finishing and starting again and again, my hometown: Verona

Overview

I love to define myself as a world citizen, but in reality, I feel—and am proud—to be Italian, and even prouder to say that my hometown is Verona!

So I thought: "Why not start this blog by sharing tips and hidden gems of my "bella" Verona?"

Also known as the "City of Love," Verona hides thousands of romantic spots throughout its historic center:

from Ponte Pietra to Castel San Pietro, from Piazza Bra and its famous Arena to Castelvecchio and its bridge.

Itinerary

The route starts from Piazza Bra and its Arena, which you can visit with an entry ticket. If you're an opera enthusiast, don't miss the chance to see a performance there in the summer! Continuing along Via Mazzini, you'll reach Via Cappello in just a few minutes, where you should make a stop at Juliet's balcony, made famous by Shakespeare's tragedy.

A short walk will then take you to Ponte Pietra, and from there, you can take the funicular up to Castel San Pietro to enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

Now it's time to refuel, and the Sottoriva area is perfect for that! It's full of small, traditional taverns, but I'll talk more about the food later. From here, you can walk to Piazza dei Signori and the Scala della Ragione where during the Christmas season, you'll find markets filled with food stalls and gifts, then in just a few minutes, you'll reach Porta Borsari and Castelvecchio with its bridge!

Food and Drinks

Food and drinks: In the evening, the perfect aperitivo can be enjoyed at one of the bars in Piazza delle Erbe. The atmosphere, surrounded by ancient buildings and the Torre dei Lamberti, is simply magical!

Traditional Veronese dishes are often hearty and perfect for winter: donkey, horse, or beef stew. Bigoli with sardines, or boiled meats with pearà sauce are also typical. Maccheroni and tortellini are well-known too.

But when it comes to wine, Verona truly shines. The red wines from Valpolicella, like Ripasso or Amarone, are world-famous, as are the white wines from Soave or nearby Franciacorta.

For after-dinner drinks, head to Archivio Bar or Traveller Bar. You won't regret it!

Now, let me introduce the TOP PICKS list. For each destination, I'll highlight some must-see places and things to do:

Top Picks:

- Castel Vecchio bridge

- Ponte Pietra bridge

-Castel San Pietro (for the sunset)

Needless to say, there are plenty of things to do just outside the city center, but I’ll talk about that in another post.
